The game started nearly an hour late due to rain. Sussex County opened a 2-0 lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth. William Salas delivered a two-run single on the first pitch of his at bat with two outs to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Sussex County responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two of which came on a two-run homer from Ariel Sandoval with two outs.
The tarp went on the field after the fifth inning and fireworks lit up the night sky before the game was officially called. Ryan Middendorf tossed a five-inning complete game but suffered the loss. Middendorf tossed two complete games last season. The Boomers managed just two hits against James Mulry, who was a reliever for Schaumburg in 2018. Brett Milazzo doubled in addition to the single from Salas.
The series concludes at 1:05pm Central on Sunday. RHP Shumpei Yoshikawa (0-0, 0.00) will make his debut for the Boomers while Sussex County has yet to declare a starter.
