For Bishop Noll senior Maximus Kubon, the world is a stage. Finding his place in Noll’s theater scene, he is set to take a role as Professor Bhaer in a musical production of “Little Women” this spring. This will be his first stage role ever.
“I've always been interested in acting,” he said. “When I was placed in theater class senior year, it felt like a gateway opened. It's my last year, and I wanted to seize the opportunity.”
Behind the scenes, he's also a vital part of the Towle Theater's technical team, operating the lighting and sound boards for the Hammond theater.
“It's fascinating to see how everything comes together,” said Kubon, of Highland. “It's a different kind of energy compared to being on stage, but just as rewarding.”
He has learned many technical skills, and enjoys seeing the entire production come together. He has also noticed how his technical work helps him understand the flow of a production, and how that informs his acting.
Balancing academics and a packed schedule isn't always easy, but Kubon thrives on the challenge.
“I enjoy being busy,” he said. "Finding the interest in both the academic work and the extracurriculars helps. It keeps me going." "Social studies has always been my anchor," he said. "I've never had a bad social studies class. History, in particular, just fascinates me. It's like unraveling a grand, intricate story." This love for understanding the past fuels his academic drive, a drive that remarkably coexists with a whirlwind of extracurricular activities.
Looking ahead, he is open to anything, he said.
“Whether it's performing, technical work, or both, I want to continue being involved.” He plans to study political science and pre-law in college with hopes to eventually pursue a career in law.
“Law has always been something I've been drawn to. I believe I can really make a difference.”
Kubon’s theater teacher, Nora Wragg ’20, is excited to see him on stage in “Little Women.”
“He is extremely responsible and well-disciplined,” she said. “He works outside of school, is devoted to his extracurriculars, and is great in class. He has a bright future ahead.”
“Little Women” is based on the original book by Louisa May Alcott. Bishop Noll will stage the musical April 10-13. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10.
