Featuring a gripping reimagining of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, this striking program also marks the farewell performance of longtime
company artist Lorianne Robertson, whose presence has shaped Ballet 5:8’s repertoire for years.
Of Light and Shadow premieres at the Harris Theater on April 26th at 7:30 p.m., inviting audiences into an immersive journey through movement and philosophy. Tickets range from $10 to $75 and are available at https://my.harristheaterchicago.org/10708/10709.
Wrestling with the Nature of Reality
At the heart of the program, The Cave brings Plato’s timeless allegory to life, illuminating the struggle between illusion and truth. Shadow and light collide in a visually arresting work that forces audiences to ask: If all we’ve ever known turns out to be a mere reflection, would we have the courage to step into the unknown?
Julianna Rubio Slager, Artistic Director of Ballet 5:8, draws on philosophy, psychology, and faith to craft a ballet that speaks to modern audiences.
“Plato’s Cave is more relevant than ever,” says Slager. “In a world flooded with curated realities and half-truths, this ballet confronts our own willingness—or unwillingness—to seek the light.”
A Farewell Performance for Lorianne Robertson
A pillar of Ballet 5:8’s artistic excellence, Lorianne Robertson will take the stage one last time in Of Light and Shadow, culminating a distinguished career of powerful storytelling and breathtaking artistry. Known for her depth, grace, and precision, Robertson has left an indelible mark on the company, and this performance will celebrate her legacy.
