Ballet 5:8 will premiere The House on Mango Street, a new ballet based on Sandra Cisneros’ acclaimed coming-of-age novel, May 8–9, 2026, at the Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago.

Cisneros, whose book has become a cornerstone of American and Chicago literature, will attend the May 8 opening night performance.

Told through the perspective of Esperanza, a young Latina girl navigating identity, belonging, and ambition, the ballet explores what it means to grow up between cultures—caught between American and Mexican identities, and the persistent feeling of being “not enough” of either.

Rather than a traditional adaptation, the work is rooted in Chicano musical traditions and performed by Ballet 5:8’s all-female Second Company. Through movement, the production translates Cisneros’ poetic voice into a visual and embodied experience, blending intimate storytelling with striking theatrical imagery.

The project is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts through the NEA Big Read and by Healing Illinois, a statewide initiative that uses the arts to foster connection and community dialogue. Over the past year, Ballet 5:8 has led community-based programming across Chicagoland—including library events, bilingual discussions, and performances—engaging audiences in conversations around literature, identity, and the Chicano experience in Chicago.

“This is a story about becoming,” said Artistic Director Julianna Rubio Slager. “About finding your voice, claiming your identity, and imagining a future beyond what you’ve been given. We’re taking a book that lives in classrooms and bringing it into the body—into movement, into something you feel.”

In addition to the performances, audiences can experience a lobby exhibit featuring artwork, photography, zines, and creative writing developed through Ballet 5:8’s year-long community engagement, positioning the event as both a performance and a broader cultural installation.
