The Curious Life of Edgar Allan Poe – World Premiere
Choreographed by Artistic Director Julianna Rubio Slager, this full-length ballet delves into the enigmatic life of Edgar Allan Poe. Inspired by Harry Lee Poe's Evermore, the production explores themes of love, loss, and redemption, bringing to life Poe's literary masterpieces such as The Raven and The Tell-Tale Heart.
Historic Premiere – Birthday Variations by Gerald Arpino
For the first time, Ballet 5:8 will present Birthday Variations by the renowned Gerald Arpino. Set to the music of Giuseppe Verdi, this ballet is celebrated for its intricate footwork and vibrant choreography. This addition marks a significant milestone in Ballet 5:8’s repertoire, honoring Arpino's legacy
World Premieres by Stephanie Martinez and Kevin Jenkins
The season will feature new works by acclaimed choreographers:

The House on Mango Street – Ballet Adaptation
The Second Company will adapt Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street, choreographed by Julianna Rubio Slager. This ballet portrays the journey of Esperanza Cordero as she navigates life in a Chicago neighborhood, highlighting themes of cultural identity and resilience.
Beyond the Nutcracker – Collaborative Production
In a first-time collaboration between Ballet 5:8’s Company and School, Beyond the Nutcracker will be restaged with live music and new choreography, offering a fresh perspective on the holiday classic.
La Llorona – Reimagining a Mexican
Legend La Llorona, choreographed by Julianna Rubio Slager, reinterprets the traditional Mexican tale through the lens of postpartum depression. Supported by the National Museum of Mexican Art and RAICES Chicago Story Coalition, this ballet aims to raise awareness about maternal mental health within minority communities. BareFace Returns – A Theatrical Ballet with C.S. Lewis Conference
BareFace, inspired by C.S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, makes its return to the stage. This production will be accompanied by a conference exploring the novel’s themes, offering audiences a deeper understanding of the narrative.
BIOS Festival – Celebrating Underrepresented Voices in Dance
The BIOS Festival continues its mission to amplify underrepresented choreographers and artists. This year's festival focuses on stories from minority women in Chicago, transforming their experiences into compelling dance works.
