Becky Alex said there's definitely something special about being on a national tour.

And when it's the 10th anniversary tour of a popular production such as "Waitress," it's even better.

"We're so excited to bring the show back to Chicago," said Alex, who portrays Dawn in the musical "Waitress."

"Waitress" continues to Oct. 18 at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago.

Alex said she has never performed in Chicago before and had been looking forward to being in the vibrant city. It's also her first tour, which she added is exciting.

"I play (the character) Dawn and it's such a fun role," Alex said, adding she was honored to be cast in the show.

"Waitress," which features music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, tells the story of main character Jenna, who dreams of leaving her small town and bad marriage in search of a better life. The musical speaks of friendship, dreams and the courage to change one's life.

"My favorite part of (working on) the show is that it's very female forward," Alex said. Not only are the main characters female but the creative team behind the show is female.

Alex added she likes the fact that one of the themes of the production promotes the idea that you can "create the story you want to live."

The actor praised the show's score by Sara Bareilles. "It's so full of heart," she said.

"I get to sing the song 'When He Sees Me' and I've always loved that song," Alex said.

The actor, who hails from San Francisco and calls New York home now, said she was interested in performing at a young age and grew up singing at church.

In addition to her work with "Waitress," Alex recently appeared in the new movie "Best of the Best" on Netflix.

FYI: "Waitress" continues to Oct. 18 at James M. Nederlander Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St., Chicago. Tickets range from $43 to $121. Visit www.BroadwayInChicago.com.
