**** Recommended The uber-talented Leslie Goddard returned to Theatre at the Center for another of her one-woman shows, Abigail Adams: First Lady of Firsts. I really enjoy Ms. Goddard’s show because she’s always so knowledgeable about her subjects. 4 Spotlights
Goddard chose to set the show at the White House, in the second year of her husband John Adams’ term as President of the United States. She told the audience that they were the first to live in the White House, which had just three finished rooms. However they only lived there for one term, since John was defeated in a particularly vicious campaign by the ‘vile’ Thomas Jefferson.

The room was furnished with absolutely gorgeous and unique antique pieces including a secretary off to the side which Abigail returned to frequently. At the time of our ‘visit,’ she Adams was busy writing her will – noting that she had her husband’s approval since she had no rights as a married woman.
As she continued to talk about her life, she read some of the letters she had written to her husband as well as some he’d written to her. The couple was apart for years at a time. While John was off tending to the affairs of state, Abigail stayed on their farm in Massachusetts and raised their children. She was also a pretty good businesswoman, building them a healthy retirement fund.

When John went to London as Ambassador, Abigail joined him. She found that her simple American style just didn’t fit into British society. By the way, Goddard said that the gown she was wearing was a replica of one Abigail wore.
Abigail Adams: First Lady of Firsts starring Leslie Goddard runs through September 20th at Theatre at the Center, Center for Visual & Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster.
