
Art 101: Kicking Off Your Art Career

It’s a new year and, as an artist, you’ve promised yourself to move your art career forward. South Shore Arts, Northwest Indiana’s leading visual arts organization, can help you with that resolution. Join us for a free workshop, Art 101: Kicking Off Your Art Career, at Substation No. 9 in Hammond, IN on Saturday, January 24, 2026, between 1 and 3 pm.

The keynote speaker will be Madeline Winter, an artist and educator in Chicago. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Indiana University, Bloomington, Ms. Winter is recognized as one of the finest representational draftspersons of our time. She currently has drawings on view in Mark Makers: An Exhibition on Contemporary Drawing at South Shore Arts’ main gallery at the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (1040 Ridge Road) in Munster. Ms. Winter has exhibited across the United States, in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington D.C. She will speak about the trajectory of her career, gaining representation at Oliva Gallery in Chicago, and holding artist residencies in Virginia and Barcelona.
Substation No. 9 artists-in-residence Dawn Diamantopoulos, Kerri Mommer, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, and Andrea Williams will lead the workshop, providing advice on how to craft a biography, write an artist’s statement, prepare photographs, and apply for shows and exhibitions. They will also discuss their careers and their current installation at Substation No. 9, New Year, Same Chaos. Also there to provide practical advice and guidance, will be South Shore Arts executive director Jonathan Canning, who will explain supportive arts grants offered by the Indiana Arts Commission

The event is free and open to all. South Shore Arts is the Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission.
