April  20, 1931     Lee Hamilton, American politician, U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana, born in Daytona Beach, Florida.
 

April 21, 1884     The city of Hammond was incorporated in Lake County. It was named for George H. Hammond, a butcher who founded the local slaughterhouse and developed refrigerated boxcars to haul beef.

 

April 23, 1784     The Ordinance of 1784, primarily written by Thomas Jefferson, established government for the Northwest Territory and a system for the area to be divided into states. Indiana became a state 32 years later.

 

April 24 1847    Samuel Henderson was elected the first Mayor of Indianapolis. About 500 votes were cast.
