April 14, 1912 The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg near midnight and sank early the next morning. Over 1500 died. Among the 710 survivors was Ellen Toomey, who returned to her home on Bates Street in Indianapolis.
April 15, 1861 As the Civil War erupted, Governor Oliver P. Morton called for 75,000 volunteers to join the Union Army.
April 16, 1867 Wilbur Wright, American aviator, born in Millville, Indiana.
April 18, 1945 War correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed by sniper machine gun fire near Okinawa. He was born in Dana, Indiana, and attended Indiana University, where the School of Journalism is now named in his honor.
