April 14, 1912 The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg near midnight and sank early the next morning. Over 1500 died. Among the 710 survivors were at least three from Indiana, including Ellen Toomey, who returned to her home on Bates Street in Indianapolis.
April 15, 1861 As the Civil War erupted, Governor Oliver P. Morton called for 75,000 volunteers to join the Union Army.
April 16, 1867 Wilbur Wright was born in Millville in Henry County. He and his brother Orcille succeeded in making the first airplane flight in 1903.
April 17, 1926 Over six inches of wet snow fell in the Lafayette area. It was one of the heaviest spring snowfalls on record for the state.
