Following the success of the summer 2021 blockbuster exhibition, “Frida Kahlo: Timeless,” the Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA) and the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at the College of DuPage (COD) will present “Warhol: Featuring Andy Warhol Portfolios: A Life in Pop / Works from the Bank of America” June 3 - Sept. 10, 2023.
In advance of the exhibition opening, CCMA and the MAC announced a new public art project, “The College of DuPage Warhol Public Pop Art Challenge: 15 Minutes of Fame,” before an enthusiastic room of more than 100 community leaders in a partnership breakfast held Oct. 2. Those in attendance as prospective partners ranged from village mangers, elected officials, libraries, park districts, business owners, and economic development professionals from across 18 communities, each seeking to explore opportunities for potential community collaboration with the exhibition.
Organizations throughout DuPage County participating in the public art project will select four notable members of their community, whether it be a celebrity, a teacher, a local hero, or anyone making a positive impact on the community. Their headshots will then be transformed into a colorful Warhol-styled mural to be displayed in highly visible locations throughout the community, such as an exterior wall or window. The DuPage Warhol Public Pop Art Challenge is to be a fun way to highlight each village or town, attract visitors to the community, celebrate the arts, recognize community members and instill civic pride.
This mural exhibition project is sponsored by the College of DuPage Public Arts Project, an initiative hosted by the COD and McAninch Arts Center as part of its mission to partner with communities in DuPage County to complete public art installations and community-art projects.

“The success of the 2021 Frida Kahlo Exhibit brought in over 100,000 visitors to DuPage County from every US state and over 43 countries. Hundreds of visitors went to restaurants, hotels, and businesses that featured themed tie-in offerings which translated to $9 million in economic impact to DuPage County,” said Executive Director of the McAninch Arts Center, Diana Martinez. “We predict that the 2023 Warhol Exhibition will have even more of an impact and look forward to building out creative ways to partner with these communities and gain civic pride.”
The breakfast included remarks from: Justin Witte, the Warhol Exhibition Curator, Greg Bedlov of Choose DuPage, Beth Marchetti of the DuPage Convention and visitors Bureau, Dawn Smith, COD Outreach and Education Coordinator and Diana Martinez, the Executive Director of the MAC. Many ideas and hopes of collaboration between community leaders were ignited in regard to the art installation placements and who to recognize.
