This reviewer was mesmorized as all the musicians not only supplied great orchestration but, acted and sang amazingly. This unusual musical prodcution is the brainchild of Preston Max Allen. He worked on it for ten years, adding, deleting, and tweaking until he felt comfortable. Preston created the story, music and lyrics. If the unique production does not impress you, the musical numbers will.
“Never Better” is the story of Davy, played by Emma Samuelson, a college student who starts feeling ill but hesitates to get medical help. At the urging of her friend and roommate, April, played by Melody Murray, she finally sees Aynsley, a doctor/nurse practioner, played by Liz Bollar. For some reason Aynsley feels a special bond with Davy.
Davy, because of her family medical history, suspects that her health issues might be serious, pulls away from all those who want to support her. These include her father as well as April, Aynsley and boy friend Carter, played by Shawn Smith. Finally, Aynsley, who has lost a loved one to a medical issue, persists and breaks through. Davy finally accepts the support of all the people who love her and pursues treament.
The direction by Landree Fleming needs to get a big shout out for making this complex production work well in a small cabaret theater setting.
While the storyline is tense and heavy, the message that love and support from friends and family conquors all. The strength of this unique musical is the talent of the cast. Because the acting, singing and music are done so well, this reviewer considers this production a breakthrough musical and recommends that you see it.
