The Munster Police Department celebrated National School Resource Officer Day on Wednesday, February 15th.
School Resource Officers are full-time law enforcement officers with sworn law enforcement authority, trained in school-based policing and crisis response and assigned by an employing law enforcement agency to work with schools using community-oriented policing concepts.
The Munster Police Department has three, full-time SROs assigned to our school buildings to help promote safety for our staff members and students. Our SROs provide building security, instruct the D.A.R.E. Program to approximately 2,000 students each year, provide staff safety training, assist with various safety drills, complete police reports, assist with building security assessments, and supervise security for special events. Additional services include station tours, car seat installation inspections, and more. Each of our SROs are certified through the National Association of School Resource Officers and the Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy.
