Two hundred and thirteen current and recently graduated Munster High School students received a little reward for their hard work on last Spring’s AP exams! Students enrolled in all AP English and select AP STEM classes for the 2021-22 school year had the opportunity to receive a $100 incentive for each exam passed with a score of 3, 4 or 5.
This incentive program, offered through AP-TIP IN Notre Dame, focuses on encouraging students who may not have taken AP courses in the past to participate in more rigorous coursework offered through AP curriculum. MHS is excited to announce that students enrolled in the AP Computer Science Principles course has been added to the list of acceptable courses for the 2022-23 school year will be eligible for this incentive program for the 2023 Spring AP testing.
Guidance Counselor, Mr. Peter Gregory stated, “We have partnered with the Advanced Placement Teacher Investment Program through the University of Notre Dame since 2021. Each cohort participates for 2 to 3 years. The goals of the AP-TIP IN program are to increase the enrollment of students in math, science and English Advanced Placement classes, and to increase the number of qualifying scores (3, 4 or 5) on AP math, science, and English exams in the schools participating in the project. Our AP teachers in the program have participated in training over the summer and get added support from Content Director teachers and teacher collaboratives throughout the school year. The program also provides online support for students in their AP Classes with SOS- Student Online Sessions. We have also successfully implemented strategies to increase our enrollment in AP Courses and the number of students taking exams.”
Gregory also stated, “I believe that their use of data driven strategies along with teacher and student support have helped us improve our AP program at Munster High School. The program has helped us take an informed reflective look at our strategies and procedures leading to increased participation. Our teachers have benefited by collaboration outside the district and support with successfully implementing and delivering the College Board Advanced Placement curriculum.”
The program, AP-TIP IN, started in 2012 as a way to get students in districts with high numbers of minorities and students living in poverty to enroll in AP science, math and English classes. AP-TIP works primarily with schools across Indiana to support both teacher and student success in AP courses. The way the program works is the AP-TIP IN staff, located at the University of Notre Dame, works with schools to set goals for how many students will enroll in AP classes and how many of those will pass the AP test. AP-TIP IN provides professional development for the AP teachers as well. Since the inception, the program has seen an increase in the number of students enrolling in AP classes as well as the number of students who passed the AP test at the end of the year.
