**** Highly Recommended **** Guess what? Theatre at the Center was sold out! That’s right, there were no empty seats at Sunday’s performance of Late Nite Catechism. Everyone in that audience was there to have fun – and they did. Sister had everyone laughing and the laughter was good to hear. TATC has been closed way too long. 4 Spotlights
Late Night Catechism features Mary Zentmyer as Sister. Wearing a full habit (that’s what a nun’s outfit is called – hence the penguin meme), Sister had everyone laughing in her adult catechism class, which was actually Father Murphy’s class, but he was busy, probably playing golf.
Using an old-fashioned free standing blackboard with a list of saints, Sister filled everyone in on the individual’s life story before deciding saint-or-not. As she taught the class, she picked out people in the audience for disciplinary reasons – one was displaying too much bosom – got a handkerchief tucked into her neckline, another was chewing gum. She called on others to answer basic questions like – what do the initials CCD stand for? or what is the stigmata? She even had prizes for those who gave a correct answer – things like a blessed virgin key chain or laminated trading cards of the saints.
Whether you went to Catholic school or (horrors) public school, really didn’t matter, this show will take you back to another time. Sister delivered her corrections with an absolutely straight face, while the audience howled with laughter.
If you missed Late Nite Catechism, don’t worry, Sister returns in Are You Smarter than Your 8th Grade Nun? hosted by Vicki Quade, creator of Late Nite Catechism, June 18th at 3:00 pm at TATC.
Late Nite Catechism 30th Anniversary can be enjoyed at the Greenhouse Theater Center, (2257 N. Lincoln, Chicago) Saturdays at 5:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm.
