There's one incredibly easy way to help a child discover the joy of reading: let them pick their own books!
Research by Scholastic shows that giving kids a say in what they read encourages independent reading - and reading more frequently. So, how can you give your child a chance to pick out their own books? Bring them to the library, of course!
A Grab & Go appointment at your favorite branch will give your child the freedom of the stacks for an entire hour so they can pick out books that appeal to them. And remember, there's no judging at the library; Captain Underpants might seem very silly to adults, but if it gets a kid to love reading then let them check it out as many times as they want!

Holiday Hours: Labor Day
All locations will be CLOSED (including curbside pickup and appointments) on 9/7/20 in observance of Labor Day!
For Educators:
eLibrary Cards are Still Valid!
The LCPL eLibrary cards you handed out to students last year are still valid; we're waiving the expiration date so that kids learning remotely can keep their library access without having to travel to the school to get a new card.
If you need more eLibrary cards for your new students, just contact your branch and we'll send a new batch your way!
How Can We Help?
Would you like a librarian to visit your classroom virtually to explain how eLibrary cards work, or to give a database tutorial? Maybe you need certain materials to plan a lesson, but can't make it to a library appointment to browse.
If there's something we can do to help - including bundling items for curbside pickup and scheduling a virtual tutorial - just use Ask a Librarian to let us know!
