Over the years I’ve been to many a Halloween show at M & M Productions’ Center Stage Studio Theatre. This year, the show is Ghost Writer 1989 written & directed by Mike and Melinda’s son, Jacob Reinhart who took the tired “teens in an isolated cabin” trope and added his own creative plot twists. Kudos! Don’t miss this show.
As you might guess, Toby (Alex Campbell) and Ryan (Terry Thomas), best friends from middle school on, have rented a cabin somewhere. They’re planning an overnight game of Dungeons and Dragons with friends. Although they used to be close, they’ve grown apart lately. Toby, who’s wearing a wizard’s gown and pointed hat for tonight’s game, is still a nerd while Ryan, who joined the band, is dating a cheer leader.
As they’re setting up the game, Jimmy (Nate Cox), the maintenance guy, says he needs to fix something in the bathroom. Meanwhile, D & D newcomers, Darrell (Josh Roberts), a friend, and Ryan’s girlfriend, Amber (Olivia Gonzalez), arrive. Although Darrell brings a bunch of movies along, he agrees reluctantly to play the game. Finally, Paige (Karing Contreras), a frequent D & D player, arrives, bringing a costume along.
When she goes into the bathroom to change, she finds an open window but no Jimmy. Where did Jimmy go? As they play the game, things start getting strange. They see fog – inside the cabin – hear loud noises, then there’s that spell Toby read….
After all the scary bits, Braxton (Jared Jaramillo) appears in the very last scene. You’ll have to see Ghost Writer 1989 to see why.
