This past spring, in an effort to help provide new and interesting ways to help educate the public and our community’s youth about the dangers of drinking and driving, the Munster Police Department sought the support of local businesses to assist with the purchase of pedal carts and drunk driving simulation goggles.
The carts would be used during the coming years during both community policing events and through D.A.R.E. class instruction to help educate the public about the dangers of drunk driving. After putting the request out to the public, the Munster Rotary Club and American Community Bank provided generous donations to help the police department purchase two separate carts and pairs of simulation goggles for safety instruction purposes.
The pedal carts read “Don’t Drink & Drive” on the sides and have adjustable seats so that kids, teens, and adults can operate them. The rider will first pedal through a course without wearing the goggles and then are asked to do so again while wearing the goggles which simulate either .08-.15 or .26-.35 blood alcohol content, depending on the pair that the operator is wearing. The operator can then experience how difficult it is to drive through the course with the impaired vision.
The Munster Police Department would like to thank American Community Bank and the Munster Rotary Club for their generous support of this important community safety initiative
