Chesterton Art Center (CAC) is thrilled to announce the upcoming Teen Takeover: An Open House for Teens.
The day will be a celebration of art intended to engage local teens and was planned in collaboration with CAC’s Teen Arts Group (TAG). All activities and offerings will be completely free.
TAG is a free program that meets monthly, providing teen creatives with professional arts experiences and opportunities to expand their art practices. When asked what he values about TAG, current member Brodie Hadaway shared, “I enjoy TAG because I get to express myself through art in a welcoming environment. I have been able to try so many new art styles at TAG events. While exploring those is always fun, we’ve also discussed pricing and framing our art, which is also very helpful.”
TAG’s latest project has been planning the Teen Takeover. In preparation for the event, TAG members have tested out various projects, shared insights for improvements, and prepped supplies.
“We are excited to offer this very special day to local teens. In working with teens at CAC through TAG and other programs I have learned just how much the teens have to offer. Their ideas are innovative, their perspective is fresh, and their talents are inspiring. It’s exciting to be a part of an event designed by teens with the purpose of engaging and uplifting their creative community,” said Education Director Cara Schmitt.
The focus of the day will be several different artmaking stations where participants will explore a variety of mediums and techniques. They can draw their own comics, create a unique canvas tote bag using collagraph printmaking, compose elaborate collages, and engage in a community textile project.
All visitors will also be able view the current exhibit on display in the CAC gallery, Polly and Her Dad: Billy + Polly Pozzo—a stunning exhibition of love featuring work created by a local father-daughter art duo.
Additionally, the curatorial team Too Rad Comics will be presenting their latest creation, a transportable display featuring the comic I Exist! by Breena Nuñez. This display was made possible with funds awarded through an Indiana Arts Commission’s On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator Fellowship, and the work is a sneak peak of their upcoming exhibition Borders, Bleeds, Margins, and Gutters (BBM&G) scheduled to open in March 2025 at Centro de Artes (San Antonio, TX).
Teen Takeover: An Open House for Teens is happening on February 15, 2025, from 10 AM–2 PM. To register please visit www.Chestertonart.org and follow the link on the homepage.
