January 19, 2000 A new display case for the Indiana Constitutions is dedicated in the Statehouse Rotunda. Officials include Governor Frank O’Bannon, Chief Justice Randall Shepard, and Senator James Merritt. 

 

 

January 20, 1989 Dan Quayle of Huntington takes the oath of office to become 44th Vice President of the United States (serving under George H. W. Bush.)

 

January 22, 1820 The Indiana legislature approves an act for locating and laying out the first system of state highways.

 

January 23, 1867 Indiana ratifies the 14th Amendment, granting citizenship to former slaves.  Stephen Neal of Boone County is given credit for writing the original draft of the document.
