This is the goal of both Chicago artist icons— exploring the unknown. Vera Klement/Dan Ramirez: Body and Spirit showcases a selection of works by both artists whose contributions and reputations are firmly established in the history of art in Chicago. Their connection goes back to the 1970’s when Dan Ramirez studied under Vera Klement at the University of Chicago as an MFA student (1975-77), and he recognizes her as having had the biggest role in his career. Their paintings are visually disparate and seemingly unrelated, but when considered in dialog with each other, and when their sources of inspiration are considered, we see a stronger connection among them.

Vera Klement was born in a small town that is now Gdansk, Poland, but she is deeply rooted in the Chicago art scene. Professor Emerita, University of Chicago (1969-1995), her recently solo and group exhibitions were held at Zolla/Lieberman Gallery and Illinois Holocaust Museum, Skokie. She is a returning exhibitor at Governors State University, having shown “Ways of Making: Painting” (2012). Paul Klein of The Huffington Post has said of Klement “The poignant beauty of her work references literature, history and us.”

Ramirez was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. His artwork is about how “intellectual and visceral experience affects one’s sense of place” within the context of society and the human condition. Influenced by the Minimalist Movement of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, he tries to explore the spiritual and sublime. Recent local exhibitions were at the Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Chicago, and the National Museum of Mexican Art. His Colletiva de Navidad exhibit was seen at the Jean Paul Perrier Art Gallery in Barcelona, Spain (2011/2012).
