While it is known today that using tobacco products can be very harmful to your health, tobacco has a long history of use in the Americas and its popularity quickly spread to Europe during the Age of Exploration. Both prehistoric and historic tobacco pipes are fascinating artifacts. Analysis of historic pipes has been used to interpret personal politics, socio-economic status, social affiliation, and other attributes of the individuals who owned them. And did you know that tobacco was grown right here in Hamilton County during the mid to late 1800s?

Come and join the TCNH staff for this introduction to the prehistoric and historic uses of tobacco and the resulting artifacts, some of which are from the artifact collections here at Taylor Center of Natural History (TCNH).
