Spotlighting events along the south shore of Lake Michigan

Non-Equity & Community Theater Reviews

"The Full Monty" is a Blast!

TheFullMonty-1 (1).jpg

***** Highly Recommended ***** Sitting in the audience for “The Full Monty”, I quickly realized that I wasn’t just in the audience, I was part of the experience! With a seat in the front row, I was about six inches from the action … and it was awesome! “The Full Monty” is a real blast and I give it 4 BIG Spotlights.

You'll love "Shirley Valentine"

**** Recommended **** Suzanne Nyhan owns the stage at Hammond’s Towle Theater with her portrayal of Liverpool housewife, “Shirley Valentine”. Shirley’s observations on her life, her age, her husband and her children are pithy, wry and wise. I give “Shirley Valentine” 4 Spotlights.

Lifeline Theatre's Production of "One Came Home" features a Determined 13-Year-Old

***** Highly Recommended ***** I thought at first that “One Came Home” was a curious choice for Lifeline Theatre’s regular season. I hadn’t read Amy Timberlake’s coming-of-age novel won both the Newberry Medal and the Edgar Award for Best Juvenile; the operative word being juvenile. Now that I’ve seen Jessica Wright Buha’s powerful adaptation, I’m definitely going to read the novel. I can’t make a higher recommendation! I give “One Came Home” 4 Spotlights.

"First Date" is Perfect for a Girl's Night Out!

“First Date” is a sweet little musical about a nightmare experience for singles – the blind date. Although there’s nothing particularly new in the story, the twenty-somethings in the audience were loving it. The cast is attractive and talented, the songs are clever and musical, what’s not to like? “First Date” is a perfect ‘chick’ play and I give it 3 ½ stars.

"Farce of Nature" will tickle Your Funny Bone!

Did you ever wonder what went on at those fishing resorts in the off season? Does the owner spend all of his time fishing in the best spots? Will there be any fish left for you? Who changes the sheets in the off season? Hammond Community Theatre’s delightfully wacky production of “Farce of Nature”, a must-see for northwest Indiana theater lovers, just might answer a few of your questions.

Another Courtroom Drama, "Anatomy of a Murder", benefits the Lake County Courthouse Foundation

My apologies to Crown Point Community Theatre, I had intended to have this review posted by Friday, January 23rd, but I got sick and couldn’t get it done.

For the sixth year in a row, Crown Point Community Theatre and the Lake County Courthouse Foundation presented a legal drama in the historic courtroom in the old Lake County Courthouse. This year’s selection, “Anatomy of a Murder”, fit well into the courtroom, although it was sometimes difficult to hear because of the room’s echoes.

Hammond Community Theatre’s “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)” is Hilarious

Hammond Community Theatre’s “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)” is a holiday treat – with Beatniks’ yummy treats to eat during intermission, too! Hurry and get your tickets for this cheeky, charming and absolute hilarious mish mash of many of your favorite holiday stories. “Every Christmas Story Ever Told” is a must-see!

12th Annual "A Fabulous 50's Christmas" is a Holiday Must-See!

Fab50s2014.jpg

The Towle Theatre’s 12th annual production of “A Fabulous 50’s Christmas”, a tribute to the old Perry Como and Andy Williams TV specials, is always delight. 2014 is no exception. Amazingly enough, there’s at least a couple of new (to me, at least), old carols! I love “A Fabulous 50’s Christmas”, a 4 BIG Spotlight holiday must-see!
