Non-Equity & Community Theater Reviews

The Towle Theater's "Fabulous 50's Christmas" is a Holiday Must-See

Fab50's2015.jpg

***** Highly Recommended ***** It’s hard to believe, but this is the Towle Theatre’s 13th annual production of Fabulous 50’s Christmas! The show, a tribute to the old Perry Como and Andy Williams TV specials, is always delightful. Amazingly enough, there’s a couple of new (to me, at least) old carols. I love “A Fabulous 50’s Christmas”, a 4 BIG Spotlight holiday must-see!

Marian Theatre Guild shines with “The World Goes Round”

Marian Theatre Guild’s production of “The World Goes Round”, a revue filled with music from Kander & Ebb is just delightful, all production numbers and beautiful music. It’s a definite must-see.

"I'll Be Back Before Midnight" is a Halloween Must-see!

I'llbeBackbeforeMidnight.jpg

The Beatniks Entertainment production of “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight” is a psychological thriller – just in time for Halloween. Scared of the dark? Do you jump when you hear loud noises? Are you squeamish at the sight of blood? As the suspense built, I definitely heard gasps from the audience! “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight” is a Halloween must- see, and I give it 3 ½ Spotlights.

"The Drowsy Chaperone" will have You Laughing!

DG-DrowsyChaperone.jpg

The Drama Group’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” is a must-see for everyone on the south side. “The Drowsy Chaperone” spoofs most Broadway musicals using farce elements like rapid delivery, mistaken identities, dancing villains, sight gags, spit takes, double entendres and the off-stage foibles of the stars. I give it 3 ½ Spotlights.

"Young Frankenstein" is Hilarious!

***** Highly Recommended ***** “Young Frankenstein”, a collaboration between Ensemble Theatre Company and Chicago Street Theatre, is beyond hilarious. It is as good as any production I’ve seen in Chicago, and I laughed so hard my cheeks hurt. The cast, the choreography, the music, the costumes, the set – you couldn’t ask for better. Hurry and call for tickets, you don’t want to miss “Young Frankenstein”. I give it 4 big Spotlights.

Halloween comes to Memorial Opera House with "The Addams Family"

MOH-Addams.jpg

Memorial Opera House brings a new musical, “The Addams Family”, to northwest Indiana for the very first time. Valparaiso audiences are loving the show. If you want to see “The Addams Family”, hurry, tickets are selling fast.

"Perfect Wedding" will keep You Laughing!

PerfectWedding.jpg

The Towle Theater’s new production is a charming British farce, “Perfect Wedding”. A farce is kind of a departure for the Towle, but this script is exceptionally well written so it fits right in. Audiences are really laughing at the antics of the talented cast. I give it 4 Spotlights.

"Don Chipotle" is a Dark Tale of Horror

Don Chipotle-kids.jpg

* Somewhat recommended * “Don Chipotle” has turned out to be a very difficult play for me to write about. For some reason, the production started 20 minutes late – unforgivable! The actors were enthusiastic but their delivery was so shrill it was impossible to understand the words they were saying. While some people thought it was wonderful, that’s an hour and a half of my life I’ll never get back. I can only give “Don Chipotle” 1 ½ Spotlights.
