Spotlight on Reviews

"Johanna Faustus" by Alan Bresloff

★★★★★Johanna Faustus opened May 20 at the Den Theater for a 9-day run.

Adapted by Emily Casey and Artistic Director Sean Graney, this clever retelling of the Faustus tale (from Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus) features a minimalist set and an ensemble cast who take on individual roles while others sit on the sidelines commenting and adding nuance to the main events.

The Court Theatre's "One Man, Two Guvnors" is Laugh-a-Minute Comedy

**** Highly Recommended **** Hurry, hurry, hurry! Get your tickets now for “One Man, Two Guvnors”, a laugh-a-minute comedy wowing audiences at the Court Theatre. Mingle with the cast in the lobby and get your free popcorn as the fun starts early. Laughter really is the best medicine, therefore “One Man, Two Guvnors” will cure what ails you! I laughed so hard my face hurt so I give “One Man, Two Guvnors” 4 big Spotlights.

Leave Your Little Princess at Home, "Disenchanted!" is for Grown-Ups!

**** Recommended **** Did you ever wonder what all those fairy tale princesses thought/felt when the handsome prince found/kissed/rescued them from whatever evil was lurking around? If you’re like me and thought that ‘happily ever after’ was a crock, then “Disenchanted!” is the musical for you. Brought to you by Broadway in Chicago, “Disenchanted!” features ten princesses who have had it! “Disenchanted!” is hilarious and I give it 4 Spotlights.

Northlight's “The Gospel according to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord” is Fascinating!

**** Recommended **** Northlight Theatre’s production of “The Gospel according to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord” is one of the more interesting plays I’ve seen in a while. While I’ve seen other plays that put unlikely people together for a conversation, the conversations haven’t been anywhere near as intelligent. I was fascinated, so I give “The Gospel according to …” 4 Spotlights.

The Joffrey Ballet's "Cinderella" is Fantabulous!

**** Highly Recommended **** I don’t often get the opportunity to review a ballet, so I was delighted to get an invitation to the Joffrey Ballet’s “Cinderella”. “Cinderella” was originally choreographed in 1948 by Sir Frederick Ashton for the Sadler’s Wells Ballet in London to a Prokofiev score written for the Bolshoi Ballet. “Cinderella” is filled with complicated choreography, fantabulous leaps, flawless technique and timing. I give "Cinderella" 4 Spotlights.

"The Sign in Sydney Brustein's Window" is the Goodman's Tribute to Lorraine Hansberry

*** Somewhat recommended *** The Goodman Theatre’s new production, “The Sign in Sydney Burstein’s Window”, is a gem of a play, but it’s woefully out of date. I don’t think anyone has had a deep philosophical discussion about the meaning of life while drinking themselves blind, since the sixties. Even then, they were rare. I wasn’t completely bored, so I give “The Sign in Sydney Burstein’s Window” 2½ Spotlights.

Theatre at the Center's "Nice Work If You Can Get It" is Downright Fun!

**** Highly Recommended **** Hurry and get your tickets, Theatre at the Center’s “Nice Work If You Can Get It” is downright fun! It’s got a terrific cast wearing gorgeous costumes, fabulous music and amazing choreography. I think it’s a sign of a good time when everyone leaves the theater smiling – and they did! “Nice Work If You Can Get It” gets 4 BIG Spotlights.

Lyric Opera"s Production of "The King and I" is Stunning!

**** Recommended **** Lyric Opera’s production of “The King and I” is absolutely stunning! I had very high expectations for this production, which, I’m happy to say, it exceeded. The only negative I would note – at certain times I couldn’t understand some of the words. I don’t know if that was a microphone problem or a diction problem, but it was a shame! Otherwise, everything about this production is gorgeous! I give “The King and I” 4 BIG Spotlights!
