A coldwater fish in hot water

As early as 1900, cisco could be found in 45 different northern Indiana glacial lakes. Unfortunately, decades of coldwater habitat loss have reduced the cisco distribution to seven glacial lakes. The ecological value of protecting the remaining Indiana cisco populations and the coldwater lakes they inhabit is currently reflected in the State Wildlife Action Plan, in which each lake catchment containing cisco has been identified as a Conservation Opportunity Area.
