Lowell Corporal Promoted to Sergeant

After three years he was assigned as a detective in the gaming division where he stayed for six years and was then reassigned to the Gang Response Investigative Team (GRIT). He worked GRIT for three years and then went to the Drug Enforcement Section as a detective for two years. Avitia was then assigned back to the Lowell District where he again worked Lake and Porter Counties until his promotion to Corporal.

Avitia is an East Chicago native and a graduate of Bishop Noll High School. He attended Indiana University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Spanish. He spent eleven years in the Army and was a Lieutenant in the Infantry. He has been a Field Training Officer, member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon, is a Hostage Crisis Negotiator, Spanish Instructor, STOP selective traffic instructor, and has also received two life savings awards during his career with the Indiana State Police.

Avitia is a member of the American Legion and has a blue belt in the martial arts of Aikido. He resides in Lake County.
