With the support of Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson of Gary, Mayor Snedecor of Hobart, Mayor Uran of Crown Pont and Town Councilmen Pettit and Hardaway of Merrillville, the Lake County Cleanup Project will begin July 1 (weather permitting). These community leaders will strategically deploy street sweepers and manpower to coincide with scheduled cleanup dates to extend beyond the I-65 roadway and intersections.

Sheriff Oscar Martinez has committed 30-35 trustees to clean debris and trash from I-65 from Gary to Crown Point during the project. Republic Services® has also committed to help secure dumpsters and trashcans. Local businesses are welcome to sponsor or donate items like trash bags, safety vests and gloves.

“Hundreds of thousands of travelers will descend on the Region to visit our beaches, attractions and sporting complexes this summer. We want them to feel welcome and have a positive impression before they exit their vehicle,” Speros A. Batistatos, President/CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority stated. He continued, “We hope to make this an annual endeavor, offering community service hours and organizing community cleanup days to help beautify the South Shore.”
