“A Fabulous 50’s Christmas” - a Tribute to Perry Como/Andy Williams TV Specials

Fab50s17-cast.jpg

“A Fabulous 50’s Christmas” is divided into sets of songs interspersed with clever re-creations of TV commercials from the ‘50s featuring products like Betty Crocker Cake Mixes, Campbell’s Soup, Tootsie Rolls, Arrow Shirts, Fab Detergent, Schick Power Shave and more.

This year’s cast – Todd Aulwurm, Kelly Bourget, Tess Galbiati, Nikki Krzebiot, Jenn Roney and Jeff Wright – are a wonderful blend as they sing together. Individually, each is a strong voice, too. Towle Musical Director Elizabeth Tuazon plays the piano accompaniment.

Fab 50’s has lots of oldies like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”, “The Man with the Bag”, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and a lisping “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth”.

I really enjoyed “A Christmas Jazz Quartet” and the “White Christmas Movie Medley”.

Among the traditional carols, “Good King Wenceslas”, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Silent Night”.

Couple of New Year’s favorites –This year the show also includes a couple of New Year’s favorites, “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and “Auld Lang Syne”.

“Fab 50’s” closes with a special Valerie Webdel arrangement of “Little Drummer Boy/Do You Hear What I Hear?”, the only song that’s been in all fourteen productions.

Kudos to Costume Designer Kevin Bellamy who’s managed to find vintage dresses and suits for the cast. I really disliked the wigs, however. He’s also managed to recreate a 50’s set that’s slightly different from any of the previous productions. Of course, the aluminum Christmas tree – a requirement for the ‘modern’ 50’s home – is front and center in the living room. In addition, he’s created a snow scene, a corner with a comfy easy chair, and a tiny kitchen with a poinsettia-covered tablecloth.
